How students survive the “winter blues”

As the days got shorter and the sun set earlier, many students found themselves battling low energy, and a lack of motivation. The cold temperatures, lack of sunlight and academic pressure can leave us feeling drained, and unmotivated. But what if there was a way to make the winter season bearable? In this episode we will be discussing with students on their best tips to get through the winter blues. We will be joined by students in different stages of their academic career to share their tips, ranging from self-care tips to managing school assignments, our guests share personal stories, their proven strategies and easy habits they adapted to brighten those cloudy days. 

We’re joined by two students who know the struggle all too well, and they’re sharing their personal experience with the ups and downs of winter life. From navigating the mental and emotional toll of the season to finding ways to stay productive and connected, we’re talking about the little things that make a big difference. You’ll hear self-care tips, ways to stay motivated, and some surprising habits that can help lift your mood during the darkest days of the year.

1. The Study Lounge at CAC – Perfect for Relaxing and Recharging

If you’re looking for a comfortable spot to relax or unwind between classes, TRU’s study lounge at CAC are the perfect choice. Located on the second floor of the TRUSU Building, this space is designed with comfort in mind, offering couches, chairs, and a laid back vibe. It’s an ideal location to grab some downtime, listen to music, or simply catch up with friends over some table tennis or foosball! The lounge provides a relaxed atmosphere where you can take a break without straying too far form your college activities.


2. The Workbench in the Trades and Technology Building- Perfect for Socializing

For those sunny days when you just need to feel the sun without the harsh winds, the Workbench located on the second floor in Trades and Technology Building is the ultimate spot. With its views of the mountains and open, spacious vibe, it’s the ideal place to relax between classes and meet up with friends over a build-your-own pizza station. Whether you are having a quick snack or chatting with a friend, the Workbench’s chill atmosphere and killer views make it the perfect place to unwind and recharge for the rest of your day.

Located on the second floor of the Arts and Education Building, with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding nature, it’s a perfect spot to unwind after a busy day. The open-air terrace provides plenty of seating and space to spread out, making it an ideal location for socializing with friends or just relaxing by yourself. Hello, I am Yunisha Bist , and I am an international student from Nepal. I am in my second year of the Bachelor of Communications, Media, and Journalism program majoring in media studies at Thompson Rivers University. I enjoy working with people and sharing ideas. I am Social Media Ambassador for TRU World, I create content and connect with students to promote events on campus. I am also a member of the PCMA club, where I work with others to plan and manage projects. These roles have helped me improve my communication and teamwork skills. I love doing photography. I have strong passion for video editing and graphic design. I do lots of volunteering , and social works. Currently, I am doing internship with a local functional beverage company in Kamloops. I love travelling , I really want to visit the Everest base camp, and do lots of hiking. I am outgoing person so I love talking with people.

Hello everyone, my name is Israt Jahan, I am a student at Thompson Rivers University working towards my Tourism Management diploma. My hobbies include travelling and exploring the beautiful parts of the world. This is because the appearance of the various locations and the feelings that they give are what especially inspire me most. That is why with the help of my knowledge in tourism and passion for the unknown, I aim to develop environmentally sustainable travelling concepts which would allow people to enjoy the beauty of nature while preserving it. From my learning, I have understood the operations of the tourism industry and the importance of economic development without jeopardizing the environment. I think that tourism can create bonds that can have a positive impact on people’s attitudes towards culture and the environment. I have a dream to change the world by promoting aware travelling and to encourage other people to discover the world and save it.

Welcome to our website! My name is Adedamola Precious Ebietomiye. I am an international student from Nigeria. I am studying Mass Communications (Bachelor of Communications and Digital Journalism). I major in Public Relations. I am currently in my second year. I intend to use my degree to work in the social media setting or the entertainment industry. I am still trying to figure it out though. I have interest in reading (novels), writing stories and poetries, swimming, travelling, adventures, watching movies, beauty, fashion, lifestyle and just having fun. I am a shy person and I prefer being in my comfort zone which is my bed. I know how to keep a conversation going. My favorite color is black, my favorite food is jollof pasta. I do not like stress and I love money. I intend to use this blog as a medium to channel the voices of the students and challenges they face as students.

Carla Zarate

Hello, everybody! My name is Carla Zarate, and I am an international student. I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Journalism, with a major in Public Relations. I’m from Spain, but I also hold Colombian nationality. During my childhood, I lived in three different countries: Colombia, Argentina, and Spain. Now, in Canada, I’m having one of the best experiences of my life as I get to be more independent. One of my goals is to create a radio program and have my own animal foundation.

I have two favorite dishes: pasta and sushi. I remember being so passionate about learning how to cook my favorite dishes that I even took a few personal classes to learn how to prepare sushi. I love animals. I used to have seven cats, five dogs, two rabbits, and two hamsters. I’m an easy-going person who will always say yes to dessert and shopping!
