Thompson Rivers University (TRU) has officially declared the closing of its McGill Residence, which is also anticipated to be demolished later, as a phase in modifying options for students on-campus housing. The closing of McGill Residence, which has been such an important part of being a student within the grounds for quite a number of years, is to occur as a consequence of declining demands for student housing. The closure falls into TRU’s much broader picture and plan for restructuring, adjusting housing offers, and optimizing space for future needs.
For more than 300 self-contained rooms, the McGill Residence is made up of three buildings-the most popular housing destination among students who want convenience and to save on living expenses. In a recent statement to its residents, TRU said that the residence would not be available for the academic year running 2025/2026, a decision that has worried both current and future students as they searches for suitable housing.
However, no specific date has been provided yet for the actual demolition, but the close-out of McGill Residence follows a trend seen in other TRU housing like the Westgate Residence, which similarly closed doors in the past. This move to close the older buildings and re-consider housing demand is a large effort to streamline housing resources within the campus.
TRU is encouraging the affected students to explore other housing options such as the remaining on campus residences(East Village, Cayote Den and North Tower) or other off campus options. Residence Services at the university has been providing resourceful assistance in finding alternative accommodation to ensure a smooth transition for students.
